Review Borneo Rainforest Lodge with 2 year old

Sukau Rainforest Lodge

  • Package includes pickup and transport from Sandakan airport either via road at 1 hour and 45 minutes or boat around 2 hours
  • Boat has opportunity to see animals like Orangutang, Pygmy elephants, birds, and various monkeys
  • We chose driving because it’s 30 minutes faster and mitigates exposure to sun and mosquitoes. Plus, the company provided a baby car seat. I saw some Maccac monkeys along the road.
  • The one perspective you take away from driving is the extent to which the rainforests are destroyed for palm oil harvesting. As far as the eye could see, palm trees line the road for the entire 2 hour drive. You realize why many species are endangered and more reclusive.
  • At 11am, of the first day (arrive at 2pm prior day) we have seen a small (1 foot) rock python, Pygmy squirrel, crocodile, various birds like kingfisher, and various monkeys including peobonious (native only to Borneo), silver, and maccac.
  • The main tours are boat rides. The guides are all knowledgeable and use technology to locate animals and relay locations for the tours.

The last day we saw a herd of elephants, a lone bull elephant with saber tooth tusk, and 3 kramgutangs far off at the top of a huge tree. The guide said there are only 30 elephant sites a year so very rare. They have migration paths but are also usually near palm plantations to try and eat the fruit upon harvesting for palm oil.

We bought a second whole day for 2 more boat excursions: and glad we did! In a span of 2 hours we saw the Big Borneo 5: promiscuous monkey, hornbill, crocodile, orangutang, and Pygmy elephant. Most is luck. Guide said he only sees elephants 12 days a year.

It is a rare glimpse into this world and lifestyle. A once in a lifetime experience
