Think On Your Feet: Altra vs. Keen Product Review

I have a pair of Men’s Voyageur that scaled an active volcano and traversed 4 continents. After meeting an expert hiker about his annual traversal of the Appalachian Trail, he recommended researching Altra hiking shoes. I was intrigued. My main problem with Keens is the weight. The toe protection is fantastic but the added weight strains me over long periods of time and makes it difficult to climb. This culminated with me falling down temple stairs in Cambodia and bruising my knee cap – making it even harder to trek.

After research, below are data points comparing Altra and Keen shoes.

For me, main factors are Weight, Toe Protection, and desired terrain. I chose the lighter option, Altra, which allows me to go farther and feel more secure during a trek. However, it has less protection and terrain versatility. Both have similar water resistance but Keens are overall better in this category.

I prefer to spend more time choosing where and when to explore rather than wearing a heavier boot, draining my stamina, and causing an unsafe situation during the adventure.
